Welcome To Our Page, History Of Chinese Kempo.
Between 1848 & 1849 a number of immigrants from Guangdong Province in China made their way to North America with a very small number settling in what was then known as The Kingdom of Hawaii.
These came with both traditional and modern martial arts.
The Chen family style was mostly kept within the family and friends during the early years of settlement in Hawaii. This art was handed down within the Chen family until around 1936 and at that time most of the families were living in Honolulu. It was around that time that James Mitose Teaching Kenpo in Hawaii after returning from Japan. Mitose often claimed his art was Japanese rather than Okinawan, but his style resembled that of the Chen Family system. The Chen Family style was initially taught to American soldiers in the Ohau territory of Hawaii around 1941, in around 1944 the Chen style arrived in England with a handful of Martial Art Teachers passing on their knowledge.
After World War 2, the Chen Family style Kenpo stayed in the UK with the first school opening up in 1968 in the Manchester area of Portland Street. The style remained closed to the outside world until 1970's where close friends or persons with honour and respect would be allowed in. The style became known as Chinese Kempo boxing in the mid 1970's , mixing up Kung-Fu & Jujitsu and starting to adapt techniques to the 20th Century.
This traditional style is where Sifu Fawcett keeps hi origins and respectfully teaches and trains these methods and ethos along with the added extensions from 1941.
